The Makings of a Successful Website

Tips for creating a good, high quality website that gets results

Developing a website for your business isn't enough; the website must accomplish your goals for it to be a worthy investment. Generating results from your website relies on a variety of variables, but in terms of designing your website, what strategies are the most important for creating a site that successfully accomplishes your goals? This article explores what are perhaps the most important items to focus on as you and your web designer construct your site.

Communicate the purpose of your website and business
A successful website reassures visitors that they have come to the right place and that they will easily find what they are looking for. Your home page has all but a few seconds to convey to the visitor what your business is about, and why they should choose you as opposed to a competitor. Make a good first impression, and give visitors the information they need.

Communicate how you will help the web site visitor

Visitors want to know how you will help them. It's good to display how amazing your business is, but if you don't specifically spell out how your services will benefit the visitor, then you could be losing out on additional business.

Create informative and engaging content
Whether your site focuses on information, selling your services, or selling products, your website's content provides opportunity to build trust and confidence with your clients and customers.  Your content must be unique and of the highest quality (If you or your website designer cannot provide quality text, hire someone who can).  The average attention span for readers online is quite short, so it is important to craft website copy to what your audience can handle, making sure to make your points focused and formatting the text to be easily scanned and read.

Direct visitors to where you would like them to go
While it is important for visitors to your website to easily locate what they are looking for, your website can act as a method of 'up-selling' them as well.  Make sure that each page of the site provides plenty of linkages to other related areas of the site.  Chances are, at least a few visitors will take the bait and browse your website for longer than they otherwise would have, and thus improving the chances that you will make additional sales or gain additional contacts.

Focus on ease of use

Your website visitors must be able to easily locate what they are looking for. Ensure that the site is simple, that everything has a purpose, and that the structure of the website is logical and orderly. We all have entered a website in search of accomplishing a specific task only to leave after not being able to find what we were looking for. Don't be this business.

Continually refine
A website should be a living, flowing entity, always evolving as your needs and the needs of your visitors change.  It is important to continually adjust and update the content and design, to ensure that it is effectively reaching your clients and customers.

The most important aspects of your site is communicating what your business does, how that benefits the website visitor, and ensuring that the visitor can find what they are looking for. It is important to continually evaluate your website to ensure that it is effectively meeting these needs.  Without achieving these goals, it will be difficult for your website to be the success that it could be.
